New Spray Train Makes A Flying Start
Our new state-of-the-art spray train with full weed-mapping capabilities has successfully completed a series of tests and certification and has now begun the 2008 weed control campaign on the Belgian network.
The new spray train incorporates all the latest technological advances in precision application including:
- Weed recognition cameras and variable application enabling spot treatment instead of overall treatment
- Highly accurate DGPS mapping and recording of areas treated and treatments used
- The ability to vary applications and apply different herbicides on the move, according to need
- Direct chemical injection system to minimise waste
Weed control on the railways is recognised as an absolute necessity for access, safety and to prevent damage to the infrastructure, but at the same time application of large volumes of herbicides to railway track beds and line side areas poses an obvious risk of soil and water pollution and consequential environmental damage. Railway operators are under great pressure to find ways to reduce their use of herbicides and to ensure that sensitive environments on or near the network are effectively protected. The new Weedfree On Track spray train can help to achieve this delicate balance.
Later this year the train will undertake trial applications on the Danish network for Banedanmark, and Weedfree On Track are now in contact with a number of other countries with a view to expanding the service in future years.
